Phones turning into wallets...

A phone is no longer made just to merely send and receive phone calls.  I thought it couldn't get any better, but it can!  I just read an article explaining how our phones are going to be used as credit cards.  Instead of pulling out your card, the salesperson can just swipe your phone!

At first I was thinking this might not be safe; however, Abbott, a former chief marketing officer at GE Capitol said it's "inherently" easier to secure private data on a phone than on a credit card. "It's locked down with a password and the number is encrypted inside the phone," he said. "It's not sitting out in raised numbers on a piece of plastic. Even beyond that, one call shuts [the Isis service] all down, and one call can restore it."

This technology has backing from AT&T, Verizon, and and T-Mobile. The next version of the Android will be equipped with this technology and Apple hired an expert last August.

I'm looking forward to this!

  1. This is actually incredible. I never would have thought half of the devices that have come out would ever exist, let alone this. I noticed one thing though. The ever increasing popularity of the Droid compared to the iPhone. It’s quite interesting to see that the Droid may have a more popular technology sooner that the iPhone.

  2. Katy,
This is really cool. I would love to use my cell phone as a credit card and it's much more likely to make it home with me after a bar night!
I think cell phones have really changed/upgraded recently. Have you seen how you can take a picture of a check and send it in to your bank? Deposits are just that easy! I've also read lately about using your phone to scan barcodes to get pricing and information on products.
Do you remember when cell phones were huge and came in a bag that would fit between the seats? A lot has changed in our lives!

  3. This is a really interesting idea, and its just another step in the direction of making the cell phone an all-in-one application. I also find it interesting that this method would probably be more secure than credit cards, and hopefully this would result in less identity thefts and credit card fraud. I personally love this idea and hope i can use it in the near future.

  4. This is really exciting! Like Katherine, I have also heard about being able to cash a check by taking a picture of it and sending the picture to the bank. In addition, I have heard that soon we will be able to store our proof of insurance and vehicle registration papers in our phones so that if you ever need to show them, all you have to do is take out your phone! I am definitely looking forward to using this technology in the future.
